Who can you put your faith in?
Liberal or Labor? Barnett or McGowan? Maybe an independent? Or the Greens? Who can we trust? Who can we believe? Will they produce the goods? Both the major parties are promising huge savings and both are forecasting huge surpluses if they are in power. It seems that we can’t lose if we put our trust and faith in them. This week I have pondered what we really put our trust and faith in as Australians, for everyone puts their faith in something or someone but often we don’t even realize that we do. I had faith that my car would start this morning, that the bridge going over the Swan river would hold up, that I wouldn’t crash. All this is an act of faith. This week I witnessed a car crash on Curtin Avenue. One of the drivers repeatedly said to me “I can’t believe I caused this, I have never been in an accident.” He had faith that he would make it to work without having an accident. We all want control of our lives yet we take risks and place faith in things and people everyday. I believe the old saying “there are only two certainties in life, taxes and death” is right on the money but even then I need to have faith that I will pay my taxes and I will die before Jesus returns. If we don’t believe Jesus will return or let me put it another way, if we don’t believe God exist then life is but a spark in the infinite blackness, a spark that appears, flickers, and dies forever. This thought is staggering and threatening: to think that the person I call “myself” will cease to exist, that I will be no more! There is no escape. There is no hope if this is our worldview. To live consistently within in this view is impossible. We all live as if our life matters, that what we do counts, that we are here for a reason. We are more than a spark that is here for a little while then to disappear into the darkness forever. So the choice is who or what do we trust and have faith in. Either we are an accident and heading towards nothing or we are made for a purpose and heading towards immortality with our maker.Romans 9:9- says if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For one believes with the heart and so is justified, and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved. 11 The scripture says, “No one who believes in him will be put to shame.” 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all and is generous to all who call on him. 13 For, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” This is the “good news”. Because of the resurrection of Jesus we are saved (new life now and life with God forever), all we need to do is believe in our hearts, which is to put our trust and faith in nothing but Jesus, not a political party or ourselves. You can’t control Jesus but he is trustworthy and his promises are true, it’s up to you.
