Tides of change

A history of St Philip’s Anglican Church, Cottesloe, 1911–2011

by Ruth Marchant JamesTides of Change Book Launch PosterSt Philip’s ANGLICAN CHURCH—known more recently as St Philips—the only church to remain active west of Stirling Highway in Cottesloe, celebrates its centenary on 8 May 2011. The striking white Mediterranean-style building standing on the corner of Napier and Marmion Streets grew from humble beginnings. Established in 1907 as a Mission Church attached to St Luke’s in Mosman Park, St Philip’s Anglican Church has survived during its hundred year history despite geographical isolation, financial crises, traditional changes and, at one stage, the fear of closure. The congregation’s remarkable survival and its contribution to the Cottesloe community is a story that needs to be told.
