God's Plumb Line
Pam's theme today involves the plumbline. In the world of construction, the plumb line is used as a means to ensure that the construction worker hits the right spot and stays on target.The basis for a plumb line goes back over 2,000 years, even to the building of the Pyramids. The concept of having a plumb line as a picture of an absolute truth against which we measure ourselves has been around for just as long.As I ponder the construction metaphor I am drawn to all those buildings and structural works that are so unique and interesting in large part because they seem to have ignored the plumb line all together.The ancient Greeks, on the other hand, almost worshiped the plumb line. They developed their "golden mean" establishing the perfect relationship between a rectangles length and width making the building perfect in it's proportions. The Acropolis in Athens is the finest example I have seen of the plumb line and disciplined proportions in action.God's plumb line offers more than right and wrong, more than measure up or else, it offers us the choice to come to Him, to align ourselves with the most skilled architect and builder. Perhaps even to acknowledge that I don't know best! We can build however we like but the plumb line is an invitation and a challenge.Jesus was a carpenter, he certainly would have had a plumb line. I always imagine Jesus as a highly competent artisan both creative and disciplined, exercising freedom with restraint. Sounds like a great parent, a great friend, mentor, God.I wonder, whats my attitude and relationship to the plumb line? How am I building?In the AdventureMalcolm
